New England Chapter 2012 Annual Report
IPMI New England Chapter Report June 2012
The New England Chapter reports that it continues to maintain a stable membership base and remains financially solvent. Much of our Chapters success comes from having a dedicated and active Board. The board extends its gratitude for the ongoing support of our special sponsors, individual members and supporters. Their generosity contributed to another successful season.
This past program year focused upon the economy and precious metal markets. We continually strive to provide our membership with relevant and informative speakers. Our fall dinner meeting (Oct. 2011) speaker was Matt Blank, Director of Investments at Washington Trust Investors and his topic was Rundown on the Recovery (or a Rundown Recovery) - a discussion of prospects for policy & growth with implications for commodities. Earlier that day the NE chapter held its 1st (Annual) Golf Tournament. The winter meeting (Jan. 2012) featured James Steel, Chief Commodities Analyst with HSBC Bank USA. Jims discussion, Drivers of the Gold Price, helped make sense of active metals markets. Our spring meeting (March 2012) speaker, Stephen Abbriano, Managing Director / Global Head of Physical Precious Metals with ScotiaMocatta presented Global Physical Inventories. Prior to the meeting, Olympus INNOV-X demonstrated the latest equipment using XRF analysis in developing nondestructive Precious Metals assays.
Our May meeting doubles as both the annual business meeting and our Jewelry Design Competition Awards night. Three Board members whose terms expired were reelected John King of Gannon & Scott, Mike Mooiman of Franklin Pierce University, and D. P. Agarwal formerly of Leach & Garner. A new Board member was elected Bob Casale of C.A.I. Our chapter continues expanding the scope of Jewelry Design Awards Program - increased value and number of student awards. Additionally, based upon participation, all schools receive a grant to directly support their qualifying programs. Congratulations to UMASS Dartmouth, Rhode Island College, and the Massachusetts College of Art & Design. This year our chapter awarded $11,000 in prizes and grants. We are proud to announce that Lindsay Pauline Mis won the 2012 Carol Tyler Memorial Award and prize of $2,500. Last year Lindsay won an Honorable Mention.
In 2011 we lost Richard Casey a long time chapter board member, supporter and Jewelry Design Awards committee member. Our 3rd place award was given in his honor this year.
This year we lost IPMIs Executive Director, Larry Manziek. Larry was the ultimate patron and supporter of our chapters expansion of the Jewelry Design Awards (JDA) program. National continues his legacy of its generous financial and logistical support. We are grateful for the encouragement provided towards the chapters educational initiatives and fulfillment of mission. Larry had a positive impact on the evolution of our chapter and will be missed.
Attendees to our 22nd Annual Jewelry Design Competition & Awards had the opportunity to meet participating students, their parents and professors, and to hear about the truly positive impact of our program. The jewelry auction affords bidders an opportunity to acquire unique, one of a kind pieces by budding artisans. The five top pieces were auctioned, two honorable mention pieces were raffled and the remaining honorable mentions were sold at the end of the night. Proceeds are reinvested into funding next years program and prizes. The students attending get an opportunity to receive awards, model and speak about their creations and take pride in their creations being sold. Their work appears in the Awards night brochure and on an electronic overhead display throughout the evening. Ultimately photos of the award winning pieces appear in IPMIs newsletter. A total of $7,750 was awarded to students. The top five entries also received plaques: the Carol Tyler Memorial Award, the IPMI Presidents Award (sponsored by National), the Casey Award, the IPMI New England Chapter Award and an Award for Technical Merit. Five Honorable Mention awards were issued. All students also receive award certificates for their portfolio. Avery Lucas has garnered awards in 5 consecutive years - as an undergraduate with RI College and now as a graduate student with UMASS Dartmouth.
Kudos to the Jewelry Design Committee chaired by Donna Kiesel, to Ted Leach our guest auctioneer, to the students who participate, to the professors who help maintain the quality of the entries over the years, and to the judges who again had difficult choices to make in the competition. Judging was extremely difficult with so many excellent pieces of work
IPMI continued its generous financial and logistical support. More importantly, it continues to provide encouragement for our chapters ongoing focus further benefiting the institutions, programs and students. The chapter is ever grateful for IPMIs commitment to the New England chapters program.
At our first Board meeting of the 2012 2013 season, in June, officers will be elected, committees formed, dinner and board meetings scheduled, and responsibilities for educational program, speakers and venues assigned. We encourage feedback and input and invite anyone interested to become a member, supporter, sponsor or director of the Chapter.
Respectfully submitted by: JOHN John H. King, President, IPMI New England Chapter June 10, 2012
